Pink Granite Coast

The Pink Granite Coast is famous for its romantically-coloured rocks. This sculpted shoreline, carved into a thousand and one mineral treasures, is a paradise for birds and walkers. Its name come from the gigantic blocks of granite that emerge from the moor by the coast.

This is the realm of little coves, full of white sand and turquoise water, wild landscapes and the famous customs officers’ path. Follow your guide on that trail to discover stunning views and who knows, you might be tempted to dive in the fresh water of one of its many secret coves ?

From Bréhat to Trébeurden, the Pink Granite Coast stretches out in a series of remarkable curves facing a chain of islands and islets, beside fine sandy beaches sheltered by pines. At Port-Blanc and Plougrescant, the background changes with the tides and the highly colourful landscapes is also ideal for bird-watchers.

“Mor bihan” is Breton for ‘little sea’. Here, it’s hard to say whether the ocean has invaded the countryside or the other way around. Dazzling light, more islands and islets than you can count, and so many pretty coastal cottages… The Gulf of Morbihan is a true inland ‘little sea’ composed of 29,000 acres of Atlantic sea sheltered from the swell.

Thousands of years ago, when rivers had already dug their beds, they were invaded by Atlantic waters. This is why the Ocean goes so far inland towards Vannes and Auray through typically Breton rias, surrounding former hills which have turned into an archipelago of uncountable islands.

A magical place where sea, land and sky melt in changing and picturesque landscapes. It is the pearl of southern Brittany. It is also a member of the “The Most Beautiful Bays in the World” club, just like the bays of Hạ Long in Viet Nam and San Francisco in the United States.

Pont-Aven

This charming artists’ village takes its name from the river running through it. Pont-Aven was discovered in the 1860s by American painters but is most famous for its association with post-Impressionist painter Paul Gauguin and the Pont-Aven art movement.

Continuing its artistic heritage, Pont-Aven is a delightful place to visit any time of the year. With the advent of the railways, along came tourism and in the 1860s some American painters discovered the village. Word spread throughout the artistic community about its merits and in 1886 Paul Gauguin arrived. In 1888 he met fellow artist Émile Bernard and the École de Pont-Aven art movement, which focused on colour and symbolism, was born.

After walking you through the delightful village, your guide will drive you in the Nevez Peninsula, one of Brittany’s coastal jewels. In this pretty corner, you’ll find some stunning examples of houses built from pillars of stone, beautiful beaches, inlets and harbours nestling deep in river valleys named rias.

Granite, crowned with a thatched or slate roof, blue shutters, hydrangeas… you are sure to fall in love with it all.

The Emerald Coast, which owes its name to the colour of its water, is blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches in Brittany.

Twice a day, the bay of Saint-Malo and Dinard turns into a vast natural theatre and offers you the spectacle of the highest tides in Europe.

From the top of the Saint-Malo ramparts, you can lose yourself contemplating the panorama. Along the Emerald Coast, you will come across charming seaside resorts including Dinard, with splendid British villas in the Belle Epoque style. A few more miles West, your guide will bring you to the unique fortress of Fort La Latte and the impressive cliffs of the Cap Fréhel.

During your trip, enjoy the beauty of the banks of the Rance leading to the medieval city of Dinan. The road is sprinkled with tide mills, fisheries, impressive mansions and delightful little fishing villages, such as Saint-Suliac labelled one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in France”.

The Aber and lighthouse trail

There is a sublime quality to the scenery along the Côte des Abers, also called the Côte des Légendes (coast of legends). Here, the sea meets untamed coastlines and the tides make inroads into the green landscape. Majestic lighthouses keep watch at the entrance of these havens of peace, which you can reach on foot or by yacht.

This ocean headland in Finistère has one of the highest concentrations of lighthouses in France. Ports and seaside resorts are linked by the GR 34 route, known as the Customs officers’ path, making the Abers full of life.

The indentations of the abers create an intricate pattern in the Breton countryside, and each one has its treasures. Aber Wrac’h is a place of contrasts, Aber Benoît, snaking along between fields and tree-lined riverbanks, is famous for its delicious oysters. Aber Ildut, between the Atlantic Ocean and the English Channel, provides a natural shelter for boats and is always accessible.

At Port du Mazou, boats are moored to tree trunks standing in the sand, against a backdrop of picturesque houses. At Lanildut, the ship-owners’ fine residences, often called the corsairs’ houses or Englishmen’s houses, illustrate the port’s prosperity in the 17th and 18th centuries. Between May and October, boats unload their cargo of kelp, Brittany’s black gold.
